Peer Review Article Versus Popular Press Article on Lead...

Lead poisoning has been a concern for many years. In fact, because of the affects of lead poisoning, there has been an extensive decline in its use. Many people believe lead poisoning is no longer a threat, yet millions of homes contain lead based paint (Heck, J., 2005, para. 1). Exposure to lead at any level is unhealthy, especially in infants, children, and pregnant women and continues to be an ongoing dilemma in this country. I read two articles concerning lead poisoning; the first article is from FineTuning, a popular press and the second article is from Pediatrics, a peer-review journal. In this paper, I will clearly summarize each article by comparing the content of both articles. In addition, I will summarize the attention to†¦show more content†¦The author further goes on to explain what is being done about lead poisoning, and finally explaining how to know for sure if a person has lead poisoning and how to have your home tested for lead poisoning. The author pays gr eat attention to detail by providing facts to support the information provided in the article. For example, the author states, 75% of houses and other buildings built before 1978 have lead-based paint. When the paint is in good condition it does not pose a threat. When it chips and peels however, it can make a child very ill (Heck, Where does lead come from section, para. 1). This article clearly achieves its purpose, which is to inform the public about prevalence of lead and the ongoing risks associated with lead poisoning. This article is not about one specific case of lead poisoning, which is evident because the author talks about the history of lead use and the laws relating to lead use in this country. Similarly, in the article, The Need for Vigilance: the Persistence of Lead Poisoning in Children published in Pediatrics, a peer-review journal, the authors write the article with the intent of reiterating the need for medical professionals to remain vigilant with the accurate tr eatment of lead poisoning. The article in Pediatrics is written by doctors for clinical professionals and is based upon a report of a case of lead poisoning associated with ingestion of a toy necklace in a 4-year-old child (Florin, T., Brent, R.,

The Grapes of Wrath A Warning to the System Free Essays

The Grapes of Wrath, author John Steinbeck create s and shifts tone to show the failure of the economic system and how that failure causes people’s anger anger to grow inside them, like grapes, growing ripe for harvest. At the beginning of the chapter, the tone is positive. He describes California in the spring, using positive diction such as â€Å"beautiful† and â€Å"full green hills† (Paragraph 1). We will write a custom essay sample on The Grapes of Wrath: A Warning to the System or any similar topic only for you Order Now H e also describes al of the crops, how the tree limbs â€Å"bend gradually under the fruit† because t here is so much of it. Steinbeck makes nature seem perfect; the hills are â€Å"round and soft as break SST† and the men are â€Å"of understanding and knowledge† (paragraphs 2 and 3). He creates a sense o f hope which is only to be destroyed later on in the chapter. In paragraph 5, the fruit begins t o ripen. This is when money is introduced: â€Å"Hell, we can’t pick ‘me for that. † Right away, with the nit reduction of money, the tone shifts from positive to negative. Words such as â€Å"hell† and cool Ours like â€Å"black† and â€Å"red† are used. The reason for this shift in tone IS because the starving pee people are angry because there is an over abundance of food that is just being wasted. Paragraph pH 12 simply says â€Å"And the smell of rot fills the country. † This describes all of the wasted food, the e word â€Å"rot† insinuates that the economic system stinks. Sanchez 2 The last few paragraphs are a warning to the system. In paragraph 13, Steins eek uses parallelism: â€Å"Burn coffee for fuel in the ships [s] laughter the pigs and bury t me† (paragraph 13). He does this to emphasize how this was deliberately being done just so a profit could be made. He writes about how crime â€Å"goes beyond denunciation† (paragraph 14) . People are so desperate for food that they are willing to do anything to get it. Children die b cause â€Å"a profit cannot be taken from an orange. † All of these horrible things lead up to the la SST paragraph of the chapter; the warning to the system. People are trying to fish for potatoes that have just been dumped in the river, but the guards hold them back. They are trying to grab t he dumped oranges, â€Å"but the kerosene is sprayed. † Eventually, the hungry become furious. Food the at they could be eating is being wasted simply because a profit cannot be made from it. Their anger IS growing inside of them like the â€Å"grapes of wrath,† growing ripe for the harvest. The book title itself is used in this chapter. It is used to describe how people’s wrath is growing like grapes, â€Å"growing heavy for the vintage. † This indicates that some wing big is going to happen: the harvest. Obstacles to National Unity Essay Example For Students

Obstacles to National Unity Essay The obstacles to national unity Racial Inequality, Social Inequality, Religious inequality etc (1)Regionalism/Separatism (ii) Linguism (iii) Casteism and (iv) communalism. (i) Regionalism/Separatism: Regionalism or Separatism is the most advance obstacle in the way of National Unity and development. Above all regionalism and separatism are threatening to balkanize the country. Aggressive regionalism has gravely undermined the feeling of unity of the people. It creates a parochial outlook and narrow-mindedness. It is primarily a socio economic problem, related to the removal of the obstacles in the development of the people according to their genius and culture. The extremely uneven economic development of the different regions of India has created tensions and jealousy between the states as to which should get priority in the matter of new projects and industries. These tensions have their origin in genuine grievances of the regions and states that have been denied fair shares of projects and industries in the overall structure of development. The only way to do away with this imbalance in the development is to reduce and eliminate these disparities gradually. The importance of regional balance in economic development and social security as the positive factors for promoting national unity as well as in integration. Therefore, the rapid development of economically backward regions in any state should be given priority in national and state plans at least to the extent that a minimum level of development is reached for all states within a framed period. While this problem is not only an economic one, there is no doubt that a rapid and balanced economic development calculated to wipe out regional disparities would go a long way towards promoting national unity. Indias unity in the midst of diversity was stressed. (ii) Linguism: India is a multi lingual country. The language controversy started with Hindi being given the status of the official language of the Indian union. The people of the south revolted against it and threatened to go out of the Union if Hindi was imposed upon them. The constitution of India was amended to meet their demand. The plea of the south is that recognition of Hindi as the official language will be implication and in effect create conditions for the domination of one linguistic group over all others. The language issue is very sensitive one. We must not forget how passions were aroused on minor issues concerning reorganization of states on the linguistic basis. The linguistic fanaticism is had, but it has got to be tamed with love, understanding and accommodation not by adopting rigid attitudes and postures. Some solution to the problem which may be acceptable to all linguistic groups must be solved and evolved. Imposition of any language by force will only worsen the situation accordingly. (iii)Casteism : Casteism is another evil that stands in the way of complete national unity. The most shameful feature of the caste system is the existence untouchability, practiced against the people of the Scheduled Castes. The social oppression to which the people belonging to Scheduled Castes are subjected is one of the blackest spot on the fair name of India. Our constitution abolished untouchability and untouchability offences Act was passed in 1955, making the practice of untouchability a panel offence. But this practice still persists in our society in several shapes and forms but coming down in number games. When such a vast section of our population is forced to line in such horrible conditions of virtual apartheid, one can very well imagine how ironic and meaningless the talk of national unity must sound to the so called untouchables. .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c , .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .postImageUrl , .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c , .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c:hover , .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c:visited , .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c:active { border:0!important; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c:active , .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4d5c2caedf85ec73f6f902cb0ecc3f7c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Lean On Me EssayA hard struggle lies ahead for those who seek to integrate these poor and unfortunate masses into the body of Indian society. The ultimate solution of the pernicious and inhuman problem of easteism lies in the carrying out of the radical agrarian reforms in the interests of the peasantry, rapid industrialization of both the urban and rural areas and spread of modern scientific education. (iv) Communalism: It is the most serious problem, that needs a permanent solution. There have been communal riots in the country before and even after the partition of India. It is a poison that has deep roots in our policy. India cannot make any headway in achieving the goal of national unity if communalism is allowed to raise its head again and again without any control. It will need a long and sustained effort to eradicate the evil of communalism. It would be wishful thinking to suppose that pious resolutions of the existing government of India will restore communal amity. It is essential to strike against the forces that sustain the poisonous tree of communalism. Apart from removing all misgivings among the minority community regarding their language, religion and culture, a law should be enacted to ban all propaganda that fosters the spread of communalism and also to provide for severe penalties for publication or dissemination in any manner, of false reports calculated to rouse communal passion for the time being. In the course of a long history, people of different races, religions and languages made their own contribution to the building up of India. But in spite of this diversity, India had always had a vasic unity and a peculiar and distinctive identity. Even though the achievement of political unity and freedom have confirmed this unity, various fissiparous and disruptive tendencies, such as regionalism, linguism, casteism and communalism, tends to disrupt the solidarity of the people. These disruptive tendencies have to be controlled and countered. While certain group loyalties on a religious and linguistic basis may continue, these should be subordinated to the national interest. Lastly, the need of the hour is to take all possible measures in all seriousness to eliminate the obstacles that come in the way. If this is neglected or not done, the consequences may be disastrous. Though efforts to remove the obstacles have succeeded in a certain measure, much more is required to be done. Unity is unique but Integrity to common.
